Today was carb day. I adjusted the slow jets and then did a full carb resync.
How the slow jets were set when I got it: Cyl 1: 3/4 turn Cyl 2: 1 1/4 turn Cyl 3: 1 1/2 turn Cyl 4: 1 1/4 turn Done by ear in the cold florida december weather: cyl 1: 2-1/2 cyl 2: 2-3/8 cyl 3: 1-3/4 cyl 4: 2-1/8 done by idle-drop method (december, mid-60's) cyl 1: 3-1/8 (but it's smoking) cyl 2: 2-1/2 cyl 3: 2-1/4 cyl 4: 2-1/2 due to smoking, adjusted manually to: cyl 1: 2 cyl 2: 2 cyl 3: 1-3/4 cyl 4: 2Although I had done a carb sync prior to the slow jet adjustment, the carbs needed to be re-synced, mainly because I removed the second shims that had been previously installed on the needles. The carbs (particularly cylinder 2) were extremely off-base. I also replaced a horribly-dying vacuum hose that went between cylinder 2 and the fuel cutoff valve. The valve itself could probably use replacing, because I was able to do half the carb adjustment without ever putting a vacuum to the damn thing! All in all, the bike runs a hell of a lot better now! |
